Tatry
Zakopane
Tatry - welcome to the most popular winter sports centres in Poland. The most famous is Zakopane, recognized as the winter capital of Poland. It is situated in a scenic mid-mountain valley and offers breath-taking views of the Tatras peaks, which rise up to 2,500 m above sea level.
The town provides all tourists, both experienced ones and beginners, with great opportunities to practice skiing. It also attracts with its unique ambience, which is created by genuine highlanders’ folk art, original building style, the colourful crowd of tourists in Krupówki Street (the main resort mall) and last but not least, numerous charming and stylish restaurants and jazz and rock pubs.
Winter sports have been present in Zakopane for over a century now. Today, skiers find great skiing conditions here – flat and easy skiing areas but also steep and difficult ski runs. Each winter, several ski lifts are available to public.
The best conditions in the Tatras can be found in the area of Kasprowy Wierch, which can be reached in an aerial cableway, almost 4.3 km long (the difference in levels is almost 100 m). A number of chair lifts have been built, a few ski runs were marked on its slopes and the skiing season here lasts till May.
Also, other runs have been well prepared for skiers: the range of Gubałówka, the slopes of Nosal and Polana Szymoszkowa – with countless ski lifts and ski runs covered with artificial snow.
Rental of skiing equipment is available at the place and on almost all slopes ski instructors offer their services.
Excellent conditions for practicing winter sports can be found in villages and resorts neighbouring Zakopane – Bukowina Tatrzańska, Białka Tatrzańska, Poronin. Milder slopes near the villages are fitted with ski lifts and scenic ski runs.
Zakopane also offers other possibilities and attractions, which can make winter holidays more exciting. The walking routes in the Tatras valleys (the area of the National Park) adjacent to the town and in a more distant Chochołowska Valley are really charming and tourists have a chance to admire unforgettable views of the snow-capped peaks.
Sudety Mountains
Szklarska Poręba
The major winter sports centre in the Sudetes is still Szklarska Poręba, where skiing and snowboarding can be practices from December to mid-April. The main crowd-puller here is Szczawnica and its Ski Arena with a cableway and a few more complicated ski runs. One of them is FIS – a ski run, the longest Lolobrygida (4444 m) and lit up Puchatek ski run, which invites skiers to try skiing at night. The resort is the venue of various championships in Alpine skiing and snowboarding.
Karpacz
Also Karpacz, crammed full both in winter and summer, offers better and better conditions for skiers and snowboarders. They can take advantage of the lift to Kopa, two new ski lifts make it possible to go to Hala Złotówka. And, in the centre of Karpacz, there are two skiing mini-stations with the snowmaking system, which are lit up to provide skiing opportunities at night. In January, Karpacz is the host of the Polish Snowboarding Cup competition.
Zieleniec
Zieleniec, famous for a long-lying snow cap, remains the most popular skiing centre in the Sedetes for whole families. There are over 200 lifts. Recently, the town had had to face competition with another winter sports centre Czarna Góra at the foot of Śniżnik. The complex consists of a cableway and six lifts.
Polish mountains and winter sports centres invite both skiers and enthusiasts of more and more popular snowboarding or of more freestyle skiing - those who treat skiing as good fun and form of recreation.
Go skiing not only in the Alps – welcome to winter sports centres in the Polish mountains!
Beskid Śląski Mountains
Szczyrk
Szczyrk in the Beskid Śląski Mountains is a real paradise for skiers. It is the largest Polish winter sports centre – both in terms of the number of ski runs and their attractiveness. They are extremely varied, starting with the FIS run for sportsmen, through Bieńkula and Golgota, snow-capped and perfectly maintained, and at last small skiing areas for begginers. Also, good ski runs are available at the Salmopolska Pass and in Biła.
Snow remains on the slopes of the peaks surrounding Szczyrk from December to April. The highest peak rises up to 1,100-1,200 m above sea level. Downhill skiing fans may take advantage of the network of 30 ski lifts and chair lift to Skrzyczne.
In Beskid Śląski, there are lots of minor skiing centres, which are worth seeing. One of them is Wisła, with well-prepared ski runs on Stożek, Malinka and Soszów, and also centres in the vicinity of the town of Bielsko-Biała such as Szyndzielnia and Klimczok, with a state-of-the-art gondola lift and interesting ski runs. Ustroń offers aerial cableway to Czantoria and lifts in the nearby Jaszowiec.
